Put it in a fireplace with wood.

you can use a lighter. hold it on the coal for about 5-10 seconds and then youll see red sparks on the coal and itll make some noise and smoke. once the noise and smoke are done.. your coal is ready to go on the hookahhhh!!

Light it, you might have to hold the lighter there for a minute. Then blow! Blow on the coal, it’ll heat it up faster. Don’t hold it too close to your face of course. I usually hold it with the tongs and blow each side for awhile and it’ll turn red and hot and voila!

haha all these other people who have answered don’t know much about hookah. most of them are thinking of quick light coals which spark and turn red after heating it with a lighter for a few seconds.
Natural coals take a bit longer to heat up. me and my friends used the electric stoves sometimes or we used a small blowtorch. if it says to use no gas fires then i guess you have about 2 options, the stove or a real fire.
even if you do use a gas fire the coals are still much better for you. quick light coals have many toxens in them.

Dirty duggan got it pretty much right, just to add, it is best to light the coal on a stove, turning it somewhat frequently to light the entire coal evenly, this will allow for a steady smoke, that wont fluctuate.
Quicklight coals have accelerators such as gun powder and lighter fluid, which allow them to light to quickly. Newer quicklight tablets such as Swift Lite Charcoals use a unique new formula in which the tablets are soaked in only a fraction of the amount of accelerator used by most other quicklight coals.
