You have to build a small fire under them with paper and small pices of wood (kindling). Once the coal catches fire, you can just keep adding more coal
Are you talking charcoal briquettes or regular coal? Back in the days of coal fired stoves people used to build a wood fire starting with kindling, when it got going good enough they started tossing in the coal. In order to properly burn coal you need a stove of some sort.
Now with charcoal you can do the same thing or simply use charcoal lighter fluid. Both need some sort of metal or stone receptacle to properly burn, you won’t have much luck trying to build a campfire with just the coals. However once you get a good old fashion campfire going good enough you can toss in some coal for more heat.
