Best place to get the most information on wood stoves?

dude0116 asked:

I am planning on installing a wood or wood pellet stove in the spring of 2009. I want to research as much as passable before I go shopping for my stove. My house is not to to big but I want the stove to heat the downstairs and as much as the up stairs as passable. What is better a wood stove or pellet stove I really don’t want to use coal but is that more cost efficient than wood or wood pellets? How much of a factor does the location of the stove play a role in proper distribution of heat How can I make the are “kid friendly” so my children do not get hurt. Any advice website personal stories would be helpful. Thank you

shop for your stove locally and let the woodstove seller guide you through the whole process from buying to installing to burning…thats what they are paid for…

Hey…I used to burn 6 to 7 cords of wood per season. LOTS of work keeping up with it. Pretty messy also. I was heating almost 2500 square feet with one stove, used small fan to circulate, but not always. Had open loft, cathedral ceiling. Kept the upstairs toasty. The downstairs had chilly spots. I had an air-tight Kent wood stove. They are made in New Zealand. Very good stove. Air intake was inside above glass door. That design kept glass very clean. Very important to burn only seasoned wood. Make sure you monitor chimney for creosote buildup. Try and make the chimney a straight run, for ease of cleanout. Never used pellets. There are some companies that make combo wood-pellet stoves…Avoid coal, not very “green”. I had two fireplace screens to keep kids away. Worked OK, but you still must watch them CONSTANTLY. Check out the site below for tips/safety. Lots of work using wood, but it’s by far the best warmth you’ll ever experience…..

We have a Vermont Castings wood-burning stove and have loved it.
We live in the South USA so the winters don’t last as long. A cord and 1/2 of wood lasts us all winter.
Our stove heats our 2600 sq foot house so well we have to open the windows sometimes because it gets HOT. We use ceiling fans on reverse to keep the air flowing.
Ours is in a corner with stone on the floor and behind it. When our kid was little we put an iron gate in front of it for safety. One time our cat jumped on top of it when it was burning hot. He was ok, but he never did that again!
Install one, you won’t regret it!
